很多人說數字一是單數，所以少於一也是單數。但是在英文，決定一個分數是單數還是複數，完全是由它有多少個部分來決定。簡單地說：三分之一、五分之一等等根本只有一份，所以它是單數。例如：One third of the cake是「三分之一的蛋糕」，就是一件蛋糕。

至於三分之二，就是三分之一加三分之一，五分之二就是五分之一加五分之一。各代表著兩件蛋糕，因為是兩件所以是複數：Two thirds，Two fifths。

但句子的動詞與One third 或Two thirds無關，它只與名詞配合。例如：One third of the money is mine，但One third of the books are mine。同樣，Two thirds of the forest is mine，但Two thirds of the houses are mine。

英文文法概念:

1.       英文句子中, 單數主詞 + 單數動詞

(1) One third of the cake is eaten by Tom.單數主詞是One third of the cake,所以單數動詞用is。

(2) Two thirds of the cake is eaten by Tom.單數主詞是Two thirds of the cake,所以單數動詞用is。

注意: à句子(1)(2)中,不論是One third of the cake或Two thirds of the cake.真正主詞都是the cake(單數),因此動詞都是單數動詞is。

2.       英文句子中, 複數主詞 + 複數動詞

(1) One third of the books are mine.à真正主詞是the books (複數),因此動詞是複數動詞are。

(2) Two thirds of the houses are mine.。à真正主詞是the houses (複數),因此動詞是複數動詞are。
