一、more than

1.多於；……多；超過。強調某一事物在數量上超出一定的範圍。後方常接數詞，相當於over

Their college enrolled more than 5 hundrend new students this year.

他們學院今年招收了五百多名新生。

More than 2,000 people were killed in the earthquake.

地震中有2000多人遇難。

2.不只是；不僅僅。相當於not only或not just。後方接名詞、動詞或副詞。

She is more than a teacher to us, she is our friend.

她不只是教師，她還是我們的朋友。

My trip to Beijing is more than sightseeing.

我去北京不僅僅是旅遊觀光。

Blood is much more than the simple fluid it seems to be.

血液不僅僅是一種外表似乎簡單的液體。

3.很；非常；十分。相當於very。後方接形容詞、副詞、動詞。

Her performance was more than good; it's perfect.

她的表演十分精彩，簡直就是完美無缺。

The teacher was more than pleased with what you've said.

老師對你的回答非常滿意。

4.難以；完全不能。常常要接從句，從句中常會出現can或could。（more than ... can / could）

I love you more than I can say.

愛你在心口難說。

The cold was more than the children could bear.

天氣冷得孩子們受不了了。

The hurt and pain were more than he could stand.

他無法承受那些傷害和痛苦。

二、more ... than

1.比……更。這個其實就是多音節單詞變比較級的句型。

Sound travels much more slowly than light.

聲音比光的傳播慢得多。

She is more outgoing than her sister.

她比姐姐更加的外向一些。

2.與其說……倒不如……；是……而不是……。一般來說，more和than連接的兩部分詞性相同。

She is more a singer than an actress.

與其說她是個演員，不如說是個歌手。

The boy is more diligent than clever.

與其說這男孩聰明，不如說他勤奮。

Dogs bark more for custom than fierceness.

狗叫主要是因為習慣，而不是生性凶狂。
