Many studies have established that the pig, rabbit, and chicken are susceptible to the experimental disease produced by the feeding of a high-cholesterol diet; the dog, cat, cow, goat, and rat are resistant.

 

Lesions of the naturally occurring disease have been detected in aged pigs and birds (especially parrots) and in dogs with hypothyroidism and diabetes mellitus that develop an accompanying hypercholesterolemia.
