History

The Montreal International Jazz Festival was started with very little funding by Alain Simard in 1979 as a two-night show featuring two performers at the Theatre-St-Denis, a historic theater in downtown Montreal. The next year, with funding from CBS Stereo and Tele-Quebec, the festival featured Ray Charles and Chick Correa and attracted more than 12,000 attendees. Since then, the festival has earned steady governmental monetary support and corporate sponsorship and now hosts more than 3,000 artists from all over the world every year.
