Neurons contain focal arrays of rough endoplasmic reticulum and polysomes, termed Nissl substance, that are responsible for the synthesis of proteins involved in many of the neuron's vital cellular processes such as axonal transport. Nissl substance is present in all neurons, regardless of the size of the cell body, but tends to be more prominent in those cells with voluminous cytoplasm such as motor neurons .
