Gatekeeper Training
Gatekeeper Training (GKT) programs, currently the most widely used type of youth suicide prevention programming, 14 refer to programs that seek to develop individuals' “knowledge, attitudes and skills to identify (those) at risk, determine levels of risk, and make referrals when necessary.” 15 GKT programs typically have 4 main components: (1) increase knowledge about suicide(A), (2) improve beliefs and attitudes about suicide prevention, (3) decrease reluctance to ask about suicide and persuade suicidal individuals to get help and refer them for help(B), and (4) enhance self-efficacy to intervene(C). ....
There is no evidence of effectiveness of GKT, alone without other interventions, in preventing suicidal behaviors and, alarmingly, 1 study reported a trend toward an increase in suicidal ideation among those who participated in GKT. Interactive GKT methods seem to be more effective. GKT programs are unlikely to reduce suicide rates without other coordinated, complementary, and effective suicide prevention interventions also in place.(D)
