Many teachers have been forced to assist with frontline efforts to curb the spread of the vi virus. In 2020, as mล any as 28,000 te teachers were made to take on new, non-academic roles. These roles included visiting the neighbors of COVID- 19 patients to conduct surveys, delivering rations to people in poor areas, and taking the temperatures of local residents. To make matters worse, many of these teachers were not given adequate training for how to carry out their new duties, or provided with personal protective equipment to keep them safe. Inevitably and sadly, teachers operating as frontline health-care workers began to contract the virus in large numbers, and at least 35 have died.        Of course, newly-developed COVID-19 vaccines are e now offering some hope. However, for the time being, India remains locked in a cycle of poverty that has only been exacerbated by the pandemic.
