英文字典查到：The table was laid for four.這張桌子是四人座。所以the book was laid there by him. 應該是可以的。只要注意 lie 是躺著，lay是放下、安排的意思~

Agree, but the table is not "laid" there but the things above it were laid, while the book is directly laid by somebody's hand. That's what I mean.
