For merchant ships, the invoked requirements of the classification societies such as the American Bureau of Shipping or Lloyd’s Register of Shipping play an important role. These requirements and others such as those of the United States Coast Guard and the Public Health Service establish base minimum requirements for a ship. Building form these minimum requirements, detailed specifications are prepared which describe the characteristics of the particular ship desired.
