SLT認為〝口語〞是語言的基礎,而其中語言的結構(句型)更是會話能力的基礎。學者們於是明白指出, 〝語言結構〞和使用語言的〝時空情境〞有密切的關連性,所以字彙和文法必須在合適的意義情狀下進行介紹。文法方面不做直接的說明規範,而鼓勵學生能透過情境來〝歸納〞並〝理解〞出正確的意義與使用方法。
課程內容是針對句型和字彙而設計。所謂的〝情境〞並沒有列在課本中,而是指教師上課時必須透過各種教學活動將情境帶進句型中。一般的SLT課程大綱如下所示(Frisby 1957:134):
