Cloisonné kidneys, which occur in goats, are the result of proximal tubular basement membrane thickening as a result of deposits of ferritin and hemosiderin.
Grossly, these kidneys have diffuse, intense, black or brown discoloration of the cortex (Fig. 11-13).
The medulla is spared. Although this lesion is striking, renal function is normal.
