根據《美國智能障礙者協會第十版》的定義,適應行為包括三方面的技能:
1. 概念:語言(接收/表達)、讀和寫、金錢概念、自我教導。
2. 社會:人際、自尊、負責任、遵循規則、遵守法律、自我保護、瞭解社交規範、免於被欺騙或受操控。
3. 應用:一般日常活動(飲食、穿衣、如廁、行走)、工具性日常活動(準備餐點、居家清潔、交通、吃藥、金錢管理、使用電話)、職業技能、維持環境安全。
*評量標準:上述三方面技能至少有一項,或是三項加起來的總分低於平均數兩個標準差以下。

對適應行為定義
Adaptive behavior is the collection of conceptional, social, and practical skills that are learned and performed by people in their everyday lives.
- Conceptual skills—language and literacy; money, time, and number concepts; and self-direction.
- Social skills—interpersonal skills, social responsibility, self-esteem, gullibility, naïveté (i.e., wariness), social problem solving, and the ability to follow rules/obey laws and to avoid being victimized.
- Practical skills—activities of daily living (personal care), occupational skills, healthcare, travel/transportation, schedules/routines, safety, use of money, use of the telephone.
Standardized tests can also determine limitations in adaptive behavior.
