Mucoepidermoid carcinoma is the most common salivary gland malignancy. Because of its highly variable biologic potential, it was originally called mucoepidermoid tumor.
The pathogenesis of this tumor is uncertain, although radiation exposure may be one risk factor. Published series have reported that 38% to 82% of mucoepidermoid carci- nomas will show a t(11;19) reciprocal translocation, which results in the production of the CRTC1-MAML2 fusion oncogene. This translocation is identified more frequently in low- and intermediate-grade tumors.
