 1. Situated on the Taipei-Yilan freeway, Taiwan’s Hsueh-shan Tunnel was officially open to the public on June 16, 2006. Besides shortening the distance between Taipei and Yilan, it has also brought a tremendous number of tourists to Yilan. Especially over the weekends, famous tourist spots, night markets, restaurants, and souvenir shops in Yilan are always crowded with visitors. Although this increase in tourist inflow has helped boost Yilan’s economy, it has also affected the lives of local people there.
