Original Text The secret behind the world’s happiest country For the seventh year running Finland has just been declared the world’s happiest country by the World Happiness Report, launched in 2012 to promote the sustainable development goals of the United Nations (UN). Those surveyed were asked to evaluate their lives on a scale of one to ten, with ten the highest. While Scandinavian countries as usual occupied the top spots, both America and Germany fell out of the top 20. War- and revolution-racked Afghanistan held the bottom spot in the ranking of 143 countries, with a score of only 1.7 compared with Finland’s 7.7 and Denmark’s 7.6. Gender equality, trust in national institutions and fellow citizens, and low corruption are all important factors in Finns’ happiness, says Kai Sauer, Finland’s ambassador to Germany. In 1906 Finland became the first country in the world to give women both the full right to vote and to run in parliamentary elections. When last year a reporter for Reader’s Digest, a magazine, pretended to lose 12 wallets with cash and contact details in 16 cities around the world to test citizens’ honesty, Helsinki, the Finnish capital, turned out to be the most honest of the lot; 11 of the 12 wallets were returned. And according to the latest annual index by Transparency International, a Berlin-based organization, Finland is the second-least-corrupt country in the world—after Denmark. Excellent free education, universal health care and family-friendly policies play an important role in making Finns content with their lives. Finland’s education system ranks eighth among the world’s best educated countries according to the UN World Population Review. Health services are not free, but they are affordable. Yet some argue that the real reason is that the Finns sweat out their negative thoughts. Finland has roughly 3.5m saunas, more than one per two Finns. All government buildings have saunas. An exhibition in Berlin is celebrating sauna culture with photos, videos and, you guessed it, a sauna. It’s a huge hit. All its remaining sessions are booked out.

I found a small boy of about five lying in bed and looking extremely weak and pale. “His name is Billy,” his parents told me, smiling. It was really heartbreaking to see such a young boy confined to a hospital bed. I knew I had to do anything I could to cheer little Billy up, so I stayed and did some magic tricks for him. A sparkle soon came to his eyes and I asked if I could do anything else for him. Billy replied, “Ronald, can I have a hug?” Although having to turn him down pained me deeply, I had no choice. I told Billy that it was against the rules and then quickly added that we could do some coloring instead. A while later, it appeared that he was getting drowsy, so I rose to my feet to get ready to leave. That was when he stretched out his tiny arms to hug me. I was about to refuse again, but then I saw the look of hope in his eyes. Suddenly, I realized I no longer cared if I was caught breaking the rules. Some things in life, after all, were more important. I picked him up and held him in my arms. After that, we talked and talked. He confided his worries to me. He was afraid that his little brother would have no one to play with. Also, he was scared that his dog would go hungry because he had hidden all its bones. It seemed that Billy knew he would never be going home. And yet, even then, he was only thinking of others. When I finally stood up to leave, I gave Billy’s parents my number and told them not to hesitate to call me if I could be of any assistance. Two days later, I received a call from Billy’s mom, who told me her son had passed away. She wanted to thank me for making a difference in his life, for he’d said to her, “Mommy, I don’t mind if I can’t see Santa this year because I’ve hugged Ronald.”
